Course Aims

To certify levels of competence to nationally set standards.

Course Content

  • General principles, sources of ignition and apparatus protection
  • Standards, Certification and marking including ATEX directives ATEX95, ATEX137, DSEARS ATEX categories 1, 2 & 3 and EPL's Ga, Gb & Gc
  • Flameproof EEx'd' protection
  • Increased safety EEx'e' protection
  • Type EEx'n' protection
  • Pressurisation EEx 'p' protection
  • Intrinsic safety EEx 'i'a, EEx'i'b and EEx 'ic' protection
  • Other methods of protection, EEx'o', EEx'q',EEx'm' and EEx's'
  • Combined (hybrid) methods of protection
  • Wiring systems, enclosure entries, cable glanding and earthing to BS 60079-14
  • Inspection and maintenance to BS EN 60079-17
  • Induction to competence validation testing
  • Permit to work system and safe isolation where requested

Competency Assessment

  • EX01 Preparation and Installation of EEx'd' 'e' 'n' and 'p' Systems
  • EX02 Inspection and Maintenance of EEx'd' 'e' 'n' and 'p' Systems
  • EX03 Preparation and Installation of EEx'i'a and 'i'b Systems
  • EX04 Inspection and Maintenance of EEx'i'a and 'i'b Systems


Compex National Certificate of Core Competence valid for 5-years. Non-electrical or instrumentation personnel who successfully complete the course will receive a non-electrical CompEx certificate. The Refresher Course must be attended prior to the expiry date of the new certificate to ensure continuity of the certification and issue of a new 5-year certificate.

Times of Training

08:00 to 16:30

Course duration and times may vary depending on delegate numbers. Individual delegate finishing time will depend on the length of time taken for assessment.

Special Requirements

Candidates are required to supply their own PPE, i.e. coveralls, safety glasses and safety footwear. Also required is evidence of vocational qualifications as detailed in the awarding body (JTL) document JTL925. Appropriate electrical or instrumentation qualifications include proof of having completed a recognized apprenticeship, level 3 S/NVQ, or a current S/JIB card (ECS gold card).
